The Atlanta Kookaburras notched their 100th win on Saturday with a strong performance against the Nashville Kangaroos.
Played under threatening thunderstorm clouds, the Kookas started steady and got stronger as the game progressed. Coach Bacon has the team disciplined and well trained. There was lots of shepherding, backing and hand passing to open up the game. Long kicking to position was the trademark of the Kookas win.
Two events stick in this observer's eye. One was Kookas new guy Brian Gilliam, taking the center bounce, collecting the ball, taking one bounce and then slotting through a great goal on the run. Brian has really taken to the game and provides a strong influence all of the ground.
The second, also a goal, was from star performer Paul Balding. Paul collected the ball at center half back, took off running, three bounces and then a great 40 meter goal. This snuffed out a Nashville comeback and left them deflated. It was another great performance from Paul and demonstrates his class as a footballer.
It has taken the Kookas since 1999 to rack up 100 wins and this feat has left club founder, Mike Powers, very proud. The next goal for the Kookas is a .500 win percentage, which is only 4 games away.
The Kookas will be celebrating their 100th win at The Bird in Dunwoody on June24th. Come help the team celebrate this momentous achievement, More details to follow.
